    A bot spooler architecture to integrate virtual worlds with e-learning management systems for corporate training

    Joining efforts of academic and corporate teams, we developed an integration architecture - MULTIS - that enables corporate e-learning managers to use a Learning Management System (LMS) for management of educational activities in virtual worlds. This architecture was then implemented for the Formare LMS. In this paper we present this architecture and concretizations of its implementation for the Second Life Grid/OpenSimulator virtual world platforms. Current systems are focused on activities managed by individual trainers, rather than groups of trainers and large numbers of trainees: they focus on providing the LMS with information about educational activities taking place in a virtual world and/or being able to access within the virtual world some of the information stored in the LMS, and disregard the streamlining of activity setup and data collection in multi-trainer contexts, among other administrative issues.     Between 2009 and 2011, a joint academia-industry effort took place to integrate Second Life and OpenSimulator platforms into a corporate elearning provider’s learning management platform. The process involved managers and lead developers at the provider and an academic engineering research team. We performed content analysis on the documents produced in this process, seeking data on the corporate perspective of requirements for virtual world platforms to be usable in everyday practice. In this paper, we present the requirements found in the documents, and detail how they emerged and evolved throughout the process

    Integrating virtual worlds with learning management systems : the MULTIS approach

Integration efforts assume the educators are inside the virtual world, providing hooks to services in the external LMS, to setup and manage virtual world activities. We present the inverse approach, enabling educators to setup and manage virtual world activities using the traditional LMS Web interface as an integral part of the overall educational activities of a course. In our approach, the LMS enables the teacher/trainer to setup, control, track, and store virtual world activities and its elements. It is the result of a joint effort by academic and corporate teams, implemented in the Formare LMS for OpenSimulator and Second Life Grid virtual world platforms.     Integration scenarios of virtual worlds in learning management systems using the MULTIS approach

    This work further clarifies how the MULTIS architecture can be used for integration of virtual worlds in learning management system (LMS) for organizational management of e-learning activities, as an extension to a previous work published in the proceedings of VEAI 2016. Current LMSs provide minimal support for educational use in an organizational context, and other integration efforts assume that educators are inside the virtual world, accessing the LMS as an external service. Our approach enables educators to set up and manage virtual world activities from within the traditional LMS Web interface as an integral part of the overall educational activities of a course. The MULTIS architecture foresees several alternative communication channels between LMS and virtual worlds, including the spooling of automated clients or “bots” and the flexibility to inject code if necessary and possible. In this work, we detail the application of this architecture and its approach in several sample scenarios, based on previous analysis of integration requirements.     Process development for manufacturing of cellular structures with controlled geometry and properties

    This study presents experimental results on the behaviour of aluminium alloy metal structures and foams manufactured by lost-wax casting and using 3D printed components for internal structure definition. Results for tensile tests, metallurgical properties, surface quality and geometry tolerances were obtained and discussed. The analysis focused on development geometries, used for adjusting manufacturing parameters and prototype geometries intended for geometrical and mechanical validation.     Trabalho apresentado à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para a obtenção do grau de Licenciado em Ciências Farmacêuticas.A farmácia em Portugal tem vindo a sofrer alterações, como seria de esperar, ao longo dos tempos. Nos últimos anos tem havido uma série de alterações legislativas que criaram todo um novo paradigma ao nível da farmácia comunitária, tornando este sector muito mais competitivo. Tal facto, fez com que se tivesse de dar mais ênfase a aspectos da gestão anteriormente pouco valorizados, nomeadamente a gestão dos recursos humanos, da comunicação e do marketing, com vista ao sucesso de uma farmácia. Contudo, a farmácia deve manter sempre um equilíbrio entre os propósitos comercias e o de missão social junto da população que serve. The pharmacy in Portugal has been undergoing changes, as expected, over time. In recent years there has been a series of legislative changes that created a whole new paradigm in terms of community pharmacy, making the sector much more competitive. This has meant that pharmacy had to place greater emphasis on management aspects previously little appreciated, including the management of human resources, communication and marketing, for achieve success. However, the pharmacy must maintain a balance between commercial purposes and the social mission for the population it serves

    This paper presents experimental results of compressive behavior of aluminium alloy metal foams with controlled pore morphology. Different types of metal foams were analyzed, having uniform cell structure with different pore size and gradient variation of cellular structure along length. The test samples were manufactured by lost-wax casting using 3D printed components for internal structure definition. Results for stiffness and energy absorption were obtained and compared on weight efficiency basis. The results are analyzed regarding the efficiency of the different cell structures and its suitability for energy absorbing application in components subjected to impact or compression loading.(undefined

    Numerical study on the sensitivity analysis for strenght and stiffness of regular cellular solids

    The aim of this study is to present a sensitivity analysis of geometric variables on the mechanical behavior of regular cellular solids. The cellular solids studied are named “spherical” and “elliptical”, if there is part of an empty sphere inside or if there is part of an empty revolved ellipse, respectively. Pure loads are applied separately, namely compression and shear, in order to study the influence of the variables on axial stress and axial displacement (compression) and shear stress and shear strain on shear. The sensitivity analysis is useful to establish limits for the studied variables in an optimization process and to know the influence of the variables on the results. In the case that a variable has little or no influence on the results; it must be evaluated if it is worth using it. In this work, the influence of two geometric variables, namely stacking and radius were studied for two types of regular cellular solids. The solids are composed by 7*7*7 base cells. The maximum axial stress and axial displacement were measured on compression for each model. On shear, the maximum shear stress and the maximum shear strain on the plane that is sensitive to the variation of the studied variable were taken. Three models were studied in each case. The influence of the studied geometric variables on the results are presented and discussed. It is found that all the variables have influence on the results, although in a different manner

    This study presents experimental results on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloy cellular structures filled with Polypropylene or ABS. Two types of base cell geometries were analyzed, having uniform cell structure and with a dual-size cell arrangement seeking optimized mechanical properties. The structures were manufactured by lost-wax casting using 3D printed components for internal structure definition. The polymer fill was introduced through a process of temperature assisted impregnation in a specially developed tool. Results for stiffness and energy absorption were obtained and compared on weight efficiency basis. The results are indicative of higher efficiency of the dual-size structures having PP/ABS filling that may be considered for energy absorption parts in compressive loading.This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDP/04077/2020
